Can my child have blood drawn at home?

Short answer

Yes. Speedy performs pediatric blood draws at home with a parent or legal guardian present, using child-sized supplies and a relaxed, unhurried pace so kids stay calmer than they might in a clinic.

Why a home draw can be easier on kids

A pediatric blood draw ordered by your child’s doctor can be stressful in a busy lab lobby, with fluorescent lights, long waits next to unfamiliar patients, and a rushed technician moving from one appointment to the next. At home, a child stays in a familiar room, can sit in a favorite chair or on a parent’s lap, and keeps access to their own toys, blanket or tablet throughout the visit. Our mobile phlebotomists bring child-appropriate butterfly needles, small-volume pediatric tubes, and warm compresses, and they build in the extra few minutes most kids need to settle in and feel comfortable before the stick even happens. Many parents tell us that the drive home afterward is also easier, since there is no drive at all and a child can simply go back to playing in the living room.

This approach also reduces the number of transitions a sick or recovering child has to manage in one day. Instead of getting dressed, traveling, sitting in a waiting room and then traveling home again, a child can stay in pajamas, finish the blood draw, and go right back to resting, which matters a great deal for kids who are already feeling unwell.

What the visit looks like, step by step

We schedule a window that fits your family and the lab’s requirements, including fasting instructions if the ordered test calls for it. On arrival, the phlebotomist introduces themselves, confirms the lab order with you, and checks any paperwork or identification needed for the visit. Before touching your child, we talk through what will happen in simple, honest language the child can understand, since surprises tend to increase fear more than the needle itself.

The arm or hand is warmed if needed, positioned comfortably, and the skin is cleaned with an antiseptic wipe. The draw itself usually takes less than a minute once a suitable vein is located, and most children describe it as a quick pinch rather than ongoing pain. Afterward we apply a bandage, watch the site for a moment to make sure bleeding has stopped and nothing looks unusual, and carefully label every tube before it leaves the home for transport to the lab.

South Florida families we serve

We regularly draw for families across Broward and Miami-Dade, including homes and pediatric practices in Coral Springs, Weston and Pembroke Pines, as well as surrounding communities throughout South Florida. Many parents book us for routine wellness panels, food allergy or sensitivity testing, or follow-up labs after a hospital stay or ER visit, so their child never has to sit through a second waiting room in the same week. Families managing a child with a chronic condition also appreciate being able to schedule recurring draws around school and activity schedules rather than around a lab’s hours. For a closer look at how we handle younger patients, see our pediatric blood draw service, which outlines the age ranges and testing types we commonly support.

Consent and who needs to be there

A parent or legal guardian must be present and must provide consent for any patient under 18, and we will ask to see the lab order from your child’s pediatrician or specialist before we begin collecting the specimen. If a grandparent, nanny or other caregiver will be present instead of a parent on the day of the appointment, please let us know in advance so we can confirm consent arrangements and avoid any delay once we arrive.

When to call your child’s doctor

Contact your pediatrician if your child has a known bleeding disorder, is taking blood thinners, has had a difficult or traumatic draw in the past, or if you are unsure which tubes, fasting rules or timing apply to the ordered test. Your child’s ordering provider is always the right source for interpreting lab results, adjusting medications or changing the testing plan; our role is simply to collect the specimen safely and send it on as directed.

How Speedy handles the details

Our technicians carry centrifuges, cold packs and dry ice in the field when a test requires special processing or temperature control, label every tube at the bedside, and can arrange specialty kit send-outs to labs like Genova or Doctor’s Data when your child’s provider orders expanded or functional-medicine panels. We follow HIPAA privacy requirements on every visit and never sell patient information. Call 954-232-9752 to schedule, Monday through Friday from 6am to 3pm or Saturday from 7am to 11am; after-hours visits may be possible for an added fee depending on technician availability and the stability of the specimen being collected.

Common follow-up questions

How old does my child need to be for a home blood draw?

We draw blood for patients from pediatric age through adult, as long as a lab order exists and a parent or legal guardian is present for minors.

Can my child eat before the draw?

Follow whatever fasting instructions came with the lab order; some pediatric panels require fasting and others do not.

Will my child need more than one needle stick?

Most draws only need one stick, but small or hard-to-find veins can occasionally require a second attempt by an experienced technician.

Can I request the same technician for repeat visits?

We try to accommodate requests for a familiar technician when scheduling allows, which many families find helpful for recurring labs.
