How will I get my blood test results?
Blood test results come from the laboratory and are released to your ordering provider, not directly from the phlebotomist who performed the draw. Many labs, including Quest and LabCorp, also offer patient portals where you can view results once your provider has released them.
Who actually generates your results
A mobile phlebotomist’s role is to collect your specimen correctly, label it, and get it to the right laboratory in the right condition. The laboratory itself performs the testing and generates the results, which are then sent to the healthcare provider who ordered the test. Speedy does not run the tests or interpret results, so our team is not the source you should expect results from directly.
Typical path from draw to delivery
After your specimen leaves your home or office with our phlebotomist, it is delivered to the appropriate lab — whether that is a major reference lab like Quest or LabCorp, or a specialty lab for a send-out kit such as Genova Diagnostics or Doctor’s Data. The lab processes the sample and transmits results to your ordering provider. Your provider’s office then reviews the results and shares them with you, often through a phone call, an in-person visit, or a patient portal message.
Using a lab’s patient portal
Many national labs provide an online patient portal where you can create an account and view results once they are released. Policies vary by lab and by state regulation regarding how soon results appear to patients versus providers, so timing can differ depending on which lab processed your test. If you are unsure whether a portal is available for your particular test, ask your provider’s office or the laboratory directly.
Specialty kits and longer timelines
Specialty send-out kits, including those from Vibrant Wellness, Cyrex, Cleveland HeartLab, SpectraCell or IGeneX, often take longer to process than routine panels because of more complex testing methods. These results are typically sent to the ordering provider first, who will contact you with findings and next steps, since interpretation of specialty testing usually requires clinical context your provider is best positioned to give. Keeping your own contact information up to date with both your provider’s office and the testing lab can help prevent delays in reaching you once results are ready for review.
When to follow up with your provider
If it has been longer than your provider indicated and you still have not heard about your results, the right step is to contact your ordering provider’s office rather than Speedy, since we do not have access to test outcomes. Your provider can tell you whether the lab has reported results, clarify any delays, and discuss what the findings mean for your care.
How Speedy protects your information along the way
Throughout this process, your health information is protected under HIPAA, and Speedy shares your details only as needed to complete the collection and get your specimen to the correct destination. We do not sell patient information, and our role ends once your specimen is safely delivered. For more about how our scheduling and collection process works end to end, see our how it works page.
Why timelines vary by test type
Routine panels like a complete blood count or basic metabolic panel are typically processed quickly once they reach a major reference lab such as Quest or LabCorp, often appearing in a provider’s system within a day or two. Specialty and send-out testing generally takes longer because the lab may batch certain assays, run more complex methodologies, or need to ship the sample to a separate testing facility before analysis can even begin, all of which adds time beyond what a routine panel typically requires.
Holidays, severe weather events common to South Florida’s hurricane season, and high testing volumes at a given lab can all add unpredictable delays beyond the lab’s typical turnaround time, which is part of why your provider’s office is the best source for an updated timeline if results seem to be taking longer than expected. Speedy does not have visibility into a lab’s internal processing queue, so following up directly with your provider or the lab’s patient services line usually gets a faster answer than asking the phlebotomy team that performed the collection.
